Network cables

Description

A network cable connects a device to the internet. You can also use it to set up a local network, with or without an internet connection. You need a modem, router, hub or network switch for this:

  • Internet : connect via a modem or router
  • Local network with internet : connect via a modem or router
  • Local network without internet : connect via a hub or network switch

Then you choose a Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a or Cat7 cable. You always buy these Ethernet cables from us for the lowest price.

Various network cables

Network cables are divided into different categories. They are indicated by Cat (category), a number and sometimes a letter. The numbers and letters indicate which category it is:

  • Cat5e – category 5 enhanced
  • Cat6 – category 6
  • Cat6a – category 6 augmented
  • Cat7 – category 7

The higher the category number, the higher the performance of the cable. Before you buy a network cable, it is useful to know exactly what the differences in performance are.

Cable type Speed Bandwidth
Cat5e 1 Gbps 100 MHz
Cat6 1 Gbps 250 MHz
Cat6a 10 Gbps 500 MHz
Cat7 10 Gbps 1000 MHz

The choice of cable depends on the size of your network and the amount of data you want to send over it. The requirements you have for speed also play a role.

  • Speed : The higher the speed, the faster you can download files, stream videos, and play online games.
  • Bandwidth : This has to do with the amount of data that can be transferred simultaneously over a network cable. Higher bandwidth means that multiple devices can connect to your network at the same time, without the speed dropping.

Higher speed and bandwidth is important for a reliable and fast internet connection.

The best network cables for a future-proof network

For most households, a Cat5e or Cat6 cable is sufficient. One gigabit per second (Gbps) is fine for everyday tasks, such as surfing the internet, streaming and gaming. However, it is wise to be prepared for the future. Internet speeds are increasing and we are getting more and more devices in our homes that are connected to the internet. That is why we recommend that you order a Cat6a or Cat7 cable now. This will better prepare you for the latest technical developments.

Cat6a and Cat7 internet cables are also indispensable for large companies. These types are perfect for networks where a lot of data is processed simultaneously. Cat7 cables are often used in data centers, large production companies and scientific institutions.

Cat6a and Cat7 in combination with the latest fiber optic cables

Providers, such as KPN, are installing more and more fiber optic cables. This means that these cables increase the speed and capacity of internet connections. In your meter cupboard, there is a device that converts the fiber optic signal into an electrical signal. This electrical signal then goes to your router via your network cable. The speed of your internet connection is determined by the fiber optic cable, but also by the quality of your network cable.

If you use an older cable, such as Cat5e, your network can quickly become overloaded. This happens especially when many devices are used at the same time. Cat6a and Cat7 cables have a higher speed and bandwidth, and are more stable. They are therefore better suited for the new fiber optic cables that are being installed.

The length of a network cable

The Ethernet cables in our range are available in different lengths: from 0.25 to 500 meters.

  • Short cables (0.25 – 5 meters) : for connections between devices on a desk or in a cupboard
  • Medium length cables (5 – 50 meters) : for connections between different rooms or floors in an office or home
  • Long cables (50 – 500 meters) : for connections between buildings or in very large buildings

Depending on the distance between your device and a modem, router, hub or network switch, choose the desired length.

Network cables with flexible or rigid core

The (medium) long cables (50 to 500 meters) in our range have a flexible or rigid core. With a flexible core, each core of the cable consists of multiple, thin copper wires. This makes the internet cable flexible and flexible. You can easily make bends without the wires inside breaking. This type of cable is also very useful if you want to move it often.

A cable with a rigid core has cores that usually consist of one solid copper wire. This makes these Ethernet cables stiffer and less flexible. If you bend the cable too much, there is a chance that the wires will break. Therefore, be careful when making a bend. For permanent installations, LAN cables with a rigid core are often the best option.

Network switch for your network cables

With a network switch you can connect multiple devices to the internet. The switch in our range has 4 inputs to connect devices. Ideal for computers, printers, smart home devices and game consoles. You can hang the network switch on the wall, so that it does not take up space on your desk.

Create your own network with a tool set

If you like to build your own networks, order the ProCable Network Tool Kit. This complete kit contains:

  • LSA pliers (dogger)
  • Modular crimping tool for RJ11, RJ12 and RJ45 connectors
  • Cable stripper
